6. You need a 4 on Lit, and a 3 on Gov for college credit! YOU CAN DO THIS!

Now, I'm going back to reading Looking for Alaska now, because I am in sad parts... It has just became After... and I am gonna need some tissues.

Breaking the Slump! (or at least, trying... really, really hard...)

I have been so slumpy lately... in all aspects of my life.
I haven't been particularly busy, yet I haven't really accomplished anything lately...

I finished maybe 4 books in April? And one was a play... and another a middle grade graphic novel.

I have started countless others... but I haven't been able to continue with them...

and then there's this whole blogging thing.... which I LOVE TO DEATH.

It's been a struggle to get myself to open this page, and type some words, and post them... and talk to people... it just hasn't been happening.

Why? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

All I know, is I still love all of you... and appreciate you all immensely. I really hope to be more active next month... I mean... I still have some reviews to write, so hopefully those will be written in May (or they will never be written...) and I hope that I will read more in May....

SPEAKING OF WHICH... I just put a few books on hold at the library!!!

1. The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater (I'm like number 42... it will be awhile.)
2. The Rose and the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh (Number 28)
3. The Love That Split The World by Emily Henry (#1 woot woot! I'm excited!)

I'm typing this up at like 11:30, and I am exhausted... I'm also rereading Looking for Alaska... hoping it will get me out of Slumptown... (I MEAN ITS MY FAVORITE JOHN GREEN NOVEL BY FAAAAAAR!)

So, my goals for may include:

1. Stress less, read more.
2. Don't let them know that blogging scares you to your core.
3. I want to write more posts.
4. I'm almost graduating, don't mean to boast.

Yo yo yo yo yo What time is it? BLOGGING TIME! HEEEEYYYY! I'm C Roecker and the place to be, I'm spitting out my May goals, and I surely believe. I can do this son, I promise thee, that I will write, and I'll read, and i'll drink more tea?

March Wrap Up: Better Late Than Never!

First of all, I would like to apologize for not getting this up sooner. Life has been crazy hectic, and I am now in my final two months of high school.

I have less than half a month to decide where I am going to college.... and that is TERRIFYING.

School is so stressful right now, I have two AP tests coming up on May 4th and May 10th and WHAT IS LIFE. THIS IS CRAZY. THIS WILL SAVE ME MONEY IN THE LONG RUN BUT ALSO WHAT IS LIFE.

Okay, ranting aside, her is my March Wrap Up!

Going back and looking at what I read was insane! I read so much more than I ever expected!

1. I finished Mosquitoland by David Arnold

This quirky debut was well-written and such a comment on the importance of family (at least it was for me... not the main message of the book, or maybe it was?) Anyways, I really enjoyed it. ESPECIALLY the last 40 pages which murdered my feels.

2. The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Nighttime by Mark Haddon

This was super interesting, but by the end I didn't feel like anything had really happened.

3, Fledgling by Nicole Conway

This book was really quick, and for the most part I enjoyed it immensely, although it was riddled with clichés.

4. Shadowlands

A quick play about Joy and C. S. Lewis which I highly enjoyed once I got into the story (which took a little too long for a play)

5. Fairest by Marissa Meyer

I really, really enjoyed this novel that allowed us to see Levana's motivations. Although shorter than expected, it offered a lot of important information.

I have talked about this book A FREAKING CRAP TON. It is beautiful, it is sweet, it is the stuff of dreams (literally) ;) I cannot recommend it enough.

The much anticipated sequel to ADSOM, that was much slower paced, and just as character driven, and ended with an atrocious cliffhanger that has killed me in many, many ways.

A Little Thank You and Rant!

Oh my goodness. IT's the end of March already... and  I am going off to State Thespian Festival! (If you don't know what a Thespian is... it means that I am a part of Theatre) And this year I get to relax and enjoy everything and really soak it in as it is my last time going to state!

Which is insane! But experiences with theatre have been so impactful on my life, and I will do an entire post about it when I get back, but my theatre family is so generous and kind and mean so much to me! This weekend I will be having fun and watching theatre! Immersing myself in the family! :)

Here's a little update on what's been going on in my life....

Hey guys. So, March was an insane time and oddly super stressful. You'd think because of Spring Break I would have had a better month. But, eh. It was very mediocre. I have felt a lot of pressure in my life lately, trying to hold up to my own standards and standards set by myself. I try so damn hard at everything that I do, and it's been really difficult to try and fail, and watch others not try and succeed. In fact, it kind of pisses me off.

I am one of those people that firmly believes you need to work for what you get in your life... and yes, I'm white, and I have a lot of privilege that comes with that, but that does not mean that I don't work my ass off. It doesn't mean that I have everything I need in life, and that I can kick back and relax.... NO. I have to work super hard for everything. Do I have money for college? Nope. I am entirely relient on Scholarships and Grants and I am just praying colleges will give me money.

I can't go to my dream school, Emerson College, because they are $64k a year and we simply cannot afford that. I will probably be going to Community College next year, something I would have said hell no to that two years ago. But, it's going to be practically free, so it's what I'm going to have to do.

I'm scared as hell about my future, but praying that things work out. I want to work for a publishing company and specialize in YA... and I will publish multiple books in my lifetime. I will become a full-time writer. I will do this. Because I have to to survive.

I started this blog so I could spread the love of books, and improve my writing style and hone my voice.

I am determined. I will succeed and it's all of you that help me believe in myself. With every conversation on twitter, with every comment on my blog, with every little thing you do.

This is def for the younger crowd, but Avalon: Web of Magic by Rachel Roberts was my shit back in the day.  Such a great beginner fantasy series full of friendship, magic, and talking ferrets.

Tessa Gray from TID series because she is honestly one of my favorite heroines of all time, she’s so smart and witty and caring, ily Tessa

3. How did you get into blogging in the first place?
I decided last year that I really wanted to share with other people my love for books! (Of course selfishly I thought about getting ARCs of books...) but mostly it was to meet new people and learn about new books and share about great ones!

Cody forced me into this. Not that I'm unhappy! But it was not my idea.

4. How did you come up with your blog name?
Roecker is my last name and I wanted to incorporate it so I titled my blog Roecker Reviews because I thought it flowed nicely. What do you guys think?

I had no part in the creation of this blog name. but the name is catchy, it's got alliteration. That's always nice.

5. What genre do you read and review the most on your blog? 
I am pretty sure that my most common type of book is Young Adult Fantasy, but I also read a lot of YA Contemporary as well!

Whatever Cody tells me to read, and probably occasional other stuff. I tend to like classic lit more than he does. 

6. What other types of posts do you do on your blog, apart from reviews?
I started doing TBRs this month, and I am looking into doing a few other ideas. I am really new to this whole blogging thing and I am not really sure what I am doing... But that's totally okay! Every Sunday I post one of my poems that I have written! I will be doing this until I run out of poems! What suggestions do you have? I'd love to learn some new post ideas! I'm planning on doing some Unpopular Opinions posting, as well as some Waiting on Wednesday posts and other things... but as I said, I am still learning.

I absolutely died when Abrams Books quoted me on their twitter from my review of Seven Ways We Lie by Riley Redgate (SUCH AN AMAZING BOOK!)

11. What’s an underrated book or series that you think everyone should read?
I'm not sure if it counts as underrated but Pendragon by D.J MacHale is one of my favorite series of all time, because I grew up reading it. (Not as they were published, but shortly after...) Travelling is involved and it is probably what sparked my interest in time travel (which when done well is one of my favorite things so needless to say, 2016 is a good year for books for me!)

Also: My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga is incredibly underrated in its relation to All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven... I have not read ATBP but it is very hyped whereas I don't remember seeing a big hypefest for MY HEART.

The Infernal Devices is infinitely better than The Mortal Instruments and anyone that wants to fight me on that can meet me by the flag pole after school.
In terms of underrated books though... 
I think that in the age of YA, classic lit is forgotten. It can be really interesting, I swear. 
And oh man. I love "Magic's Pawn", by Mercedes Lackey. Very good.
I can go on about books both underrated and OVERRATED for a long time.

12. Which book boy or girl would be your book BFF?
Jude from The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. He is the most precious cinnamon roll in all of existence and I love him so much. Oh, and Wylan from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo!

Naturally I want to say Jem Carstairs because I adore him but ideally I'd just straight up marry him. I still love Johnny Desperado from Vampirates even though I'm not twelve. And oh my God, Hamlet. The royal Dane to match my wits. 

13. Which book boy or girl would be your book boyfriend/girlfriend?
Can I have Iseult from Truthwitch? Or Adam Parrish from The Raven Cycle?

15. Apart from reading, what are your other hobbies or interests?
I am very active in my theatre department at my high school and really enjoy acting in general and the community it brings. I am the president of out troupe this year which is exciting and insane at the same time. Troupe 7125! I also love to write, and I have started a countless number of stories and I am working hard on a few different ones at the moment, switching off between them to avoid a block in my head. I hope to eventually publish a book... After working in publishing for a few years.
I also love Netflix (as we all do), I really enjoy the TV shows Quantico, Once Upon A Time, Code Black, Amazing Race, Survivor, Big Brother, and I loved White Collar and Psych when they were on! :D

I am a writer first and foremost. I also enjoy crying, theater, eating new food, playing loads of Dragon Age...

16. Apart from book shopping, what else do you like shopping for?
I am not the biggest fan of shopping... but I do like buying T-shirts... which all of mine are from Kohl's.

Same. But not Kohl's. I have only bought like two things from Kohl's... I also like grocery shopping. Especially for ethnic or obscure foods that I haven't tried before. 

17. At a party, the DJ suddenly changes the song – and it’s your song. What song would be playing?
Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley, Hallelujah, (For whatever reason I have always LOVED both of those songs)  A Twenty One Pilots song, or whatever my favorite song in that moment is. (Which is Stand by You by Rachel Platten & Ophelia by The Lumineers)

The Pendragon Series by D. J. MacHale. This is my favourite series of all time... I grew up with it and I adore it so much. I think there is so much material from the 10 books and I would love to see it put into a TV show so we can really see all of the different places Bobby travels!

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. And that's actually happening, by the way. Shout out to Netflix. 

19. What would your dream library look like?
Belle's in Beauty in the Beast. or something like this:
I have a slight obsession with trees, and one of my proudest accomplishments is a story I am working on involving trees.

One that's really looooong but not very tall because I am terrified of heights. That's all I know for sure. I also designed a pretty rad library in a story I wrote one time. Cody knows the story. 

20. Author you want to meet and sit down to tea with?
Becky Albertalli (as long as I can have some oreos with her as well) Alexandra Bracken (It would also be nice to tell her in person how she has destroyed me time and time again. But really, she just seems like a really kind person that I would enjoy talking to!) Countless others really, but I really want to meet these two authors!

Birthday and Appreciation

This is a super short, super informal post!

It's my birthday!

That means I am 18 years old! This is absolutely insane!

I just wanted to thank all of you, my blogger/author friends and family that check up on my blog for being such wonderful people that I absolutely adore.

Everyone I have met through this has changed me as a person, every little interaction means so much to me.

To everyone I have talked to, thank you for taking the time to be kind to me. Your graciousness and patience with us newer bloggers is monumental. I appreciate all of you, and I respect you and I hope to one day give to others what you have given to me.

Without you guys I would never have had the courage to do this and continue with my passion despite my love for this. It's the love and support and the connections that really make this all worth it.

Theatre Competition! (Personal Update for Funsies)

Hi Everybody!!!

Tomorrow is a day that is very important to me because I have Regional Competitions for Theatre. This is my final year of doing this and it terrifies me!

This year I am doing 3 different things:

A duo dramatic scene called The A Word by Linda Faigao-Hall which is a scene in which my character, Young Man, and this woman in her 50s, Beth, discuss her life... her mistakes, her problems, her falling in and out of love. And the entire time I am trying to get her to talk... about something she did in her past... And we have never gotten to the point of her admitting it... I am 'haunting' her because she is too afraid to admit to herself that she killed me... She aborted me twenty years prior...

This scene is incredibly powerful and reading it for the first time killed me. Performing it has been a dream, and it's something near and dear to my heart.

My second scene is a group scene entitled Slop Culture by Rob Badlam and it is a commentary on how our entire lives are based on 25-years of bad TV... It's hilarious... Scooby Doo, Gilligan's Island, Tom & Jerry, Happy Days and more... I have such a joy performing this scene!!! Some of my favourite lines include: "Silly Rabbit, Jobs are for grownups!" and "You can take the boy away from the coconuts but you can't take the coconuts away from the boy. Coconuts the great social equalizer!"

My third, and probably my most proud is a script I wrote called 'Monsters In The Light' in which A teacher gives an assignment to two students to draw a monster... one of them draws something like this:

and the scene is a conversation they have after and how people perceive the world differently and the realization one of the kids have about 'angels' and 'facades' in his life.

It is one of my favorite things I have ever written and I really want to share it with everyone! (Someday soon!)

Regionals gives me the opportunity to learn more and perform for my final time in competition (unless I qualify for state which would be SO COOL)

If I qualify for state that means that I place in the top 10% of everyone at the competition (or 2 groups depending on the amount in the category)

Personal Update: A Little About Me!

So, if any of you have been keeping up with my blogging, I promised myself to post once a week, and I am sticking to this ideal, by letting you know a few things about me!

Hello, I am Cody Roecker and I am a senior in high school in Hillsboro, Oregon. I want to go to Emerson College in Boston for Writing, Literature, & Publishing. I will probably go to Portland Community College for two years first, to save money... but that's where I hope to end up!

I just finished reading Passenger by Alexandra Bracken (It was a WILD ride!) and am currently reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. (IT IS SO GOOD SO FAR. OMG)

I want to be a published author for a living, and I think I can do it. I started this blog because I have a love for all things involving books, writing, reading, reviewing, everything. Personal Blogging Goals: A New Year, A New Goal

As 2015 closes, and the next page opens up onto 2016 I have made a few "resolutions" but in reality, they are just goals.

Number 1: I am going to read 100 books this year, and review them all, even if the review is short, it is important I get into the habit of reviewing them.

Number 2: Make my reviews more in depth, and less spoilery.

Number 3: My goal is to publish a post on this blog at least once a week, but if I can manage two, I will do so. (School is stressing me out, man. Senior year of high school...)

Number 4: Improve my blogging as the year goes on, learn how to do new things, learn how to make my blog better, become more active on social media when it comes to blogging, get active!

I, Cody Roecker, do solemnly swear to keep up on these goals, and hopefully gain an audience :)

Today, I have finally started Obasan by Joy Kagawa. Let me tell you, it is a struggle to get through.

I only put 10 books on my TBR for this month, because I have to read Obasan and The Book Thief. These summer assignments are killing me. I am trying so hard to get through them, so I can read books that I want to, and be able to review for everyone that looks at my blog. I have been continually pushing back beginning them for almost a month now.

I know, I know, I am slightly crazy. How could you push back books for over a month? Well... WE ALL DO IT. The only difference here is I need to read these for my AP Literature class!

I also have to REWRITE the United States Constitution, and that is a bazillion times worse than the books I don't want to read.

So I'm procrastinating both by letting you guys know the pain I am going through. I promise to get a review up by next week, but I cannot promise anything.. It's hard guys... HELP ME.

Do you guys have any suggestions when trying to read something you don't want to, but have to?

Accidental Haitus: I'm Still Here! (Plus Update!)

To everyone who sometimes checks out my blog, hopefully more of you in the near future, I am still here!

I just finished reading Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman and will be posting that review close to October as too early of a review could be bad.
Anyway, I have nothing but praise for that book, because it is absolutely fantastic, my goodness.

I have been slowing down my reading as I have to do some poetry reading for school in the fall for my AP Literature class and have to Rewrite the US Constitution for my AP Government class! Lots of work to be done!

I thank you all that support me in my endeavors, I appreciate it immensely.

Blog News: From Weebly to Blogspot

Hello Everyone! This is Cody Roecker. I have decided to move my blog from weebly.com to blogspot because I want to allow the ability to follow me and my reviews!

I will within the next few days add all of the reviews I have done so far, as well as add some new ones for some books I will hopefully be done with by then. Including We Were Liars by E. Lockhart and Awake by Natasha Preston (which releases next month!)
